The artwork for "In Violet Light" is drawn directly from the lyrics of "Silver Jet" - 'there's a Heron outside inviolate light.'

Painting by Rob Baker
In discussing possible concepts for the artwork, the band was drawn to the multiple meanings of the title. Violet light is the shortest possible wavelength of light visible to the human eye. There is also violet light beyond what the human eye can see. On the other hand, inviolate light is light that cannot be extinguished. Many possible sources of this light were suggested and several of them have been illustrated throughout the booklet by Toronto based photographer Richard Beland. In the past Richard has taken amazing live photographs of the band and came to their attention through this work.

As Rob says "Gord [Downie] encouraged me to paint an original work for this record, and although I feel there are many great painters and photographers out there who could do a better job than me, I submitted the painting to the rest of the band." Everyone agreed that it suited the title and the music of the record.
The painting itself is a watercolour on coldpress 140 lb. paper measuring 65 centimeters by 25 centimeters.
Bernard Clark, a first-rate Kingston based photographer, took the band's publicity shots, one of which appears all over this web site.
