From the artists:
When we were was asked to create a poster set for The Tragically Hip, we decided to feature an illustration that captured the lyrics of two of our favorite Hip songs, Looking for a place to happen and Poets.

Looking for a place to happen
It is impossible for me to think of Hip memorable lyrics that didn’t include, Jacques Cartier, right this way, I’ll put your coat up on the bed Hey man you’ve got a real bum’s eye for clothes. For many years I pictured the band sitting in a little summer cabin and Cartier time travelling knocking on the door and Gord welcoming him in. This is what happens when you hear a song and have no idea of what it’s actually about.

The cabin belonged to our Indigenous people and they welcomed Europeans in, and the Europeans eventually took over the house. So here he is Jacques Cartier flawed explorer with a bad wardrobe, responsible for our country’s early development and cultural heritage, and Jaques Cartier explorer responsible for the beginning of European colonization. Hero, villain both.

Poets
We chose “Poets” again because of the vivid imagery and metaphor the lyrics conjure up. For 2 kids growing up in Lac La Hache BC and Hamilton Ont. as we did, summer’s were both hot and far too short, but every kid at some point sticks their head in the freezer door to get a little relief. That was the starting point of visualizing, Lava flowin’ in Superfarmer’s direction, he’s been gettin’ reprieve from the heat in the frozen food section. Again some of the most visually distinct lyrics written by the band. Merging the ever present volcano hanging over our farmer’s every year, and somehow adding in a supermarket section, was a challenge we loved tackling.
